How To Calculate Billable Weight

If your package has a large size-to-weight ratio, your package may be billed at dimensional weight rather than actual weight.

The billable shipping charge of your package is the greater of these two weights:

1. Actual weight of your package, or

2. Dimensional weight of your package

Dimensional Weight - For Packages With A Large "Size-To-Weight Ratio"

Step #1: Measure the Cubic Size of Your Package

Calculate the cubic size of your package by multiplying the height in inches, by the length in inches, by the width in inches. Round each measurement to the nearest whole inch. The resulting total is the cubic size of your package.

How to Measure Cubic Size and Calculate Dimensional Weight

Step #2: - Calculate Dimensional Weight

1. Get cubic size from above (in cubic inches)

2. Divide this result (the "cubic size") by 194

3. The result is the dimensional weight (in pounds)

Step #3: - Determine Billable Weight

For Ground Shipments...

If the cubic size is less than 5,184, then your package ships for actual weight.

If the cubic size is 5,184 or larger, divide the cubic size by 194 to determine the dimensional weight in pounds.

For Air Shipments...

Divide the cubic size by 194 to determine the dimensional weight in pounds.

Your package ships for the greater of actual weight or dimensional weight.

Relax, We Make It Easy

For larger packages (cubic size of 5,194 cubic inches or larger)...

We've already made all of the dimensional weight calculations for you. Your shipping charge reflects the correct dimensional weight calculation for ground and air shipping.

For smaller packages (cubic size of less than 5,194 cubic inches)...

When you select an air shipping method (3 Day Air, 2nd Day Air, Next Day Air), additional charges may apply. We will notify you promptly if the shipping charge needs to be corrected for dimensional weight. Please respond to our emails and phone calls so that we can process your order promptly.

Examples of Actual & Dimensional Weight

Example #1: Package ships for an actual weight of 10 pounds.

Actual Weight

10 pounds

Dimensional Weight

8 pounds

Dimensions:

14" x 10" x 10"

Cubic Size:

14 x 10 x 10 = 1,400 cubic inches

Dimensional Weight:

1,400/194 = 8 pounds

Billable Weight (AIR):

8 pounds < 10 pounds, so package ships for actual weight of 10 pounds

Billable Weight (GROUND):

1,400 < 5,194, so package ships for actual weight of 10 pounds

Example #2: Package ships for dimensional weight (AIR & GROUND).

Actual Weight

10 pounds

Dimensional Weight

33 pounds

Dimensions:

20" x 20" x 16"

Cubic Size:

20 x 20 x 16 = 6,400 cubic inches

Dimensional Weight:

6,400/194 = 33 pounds

Billable Weight (AIR):

33 pounds > 10 pounds, so package ships for dimensional weight of 33 pounds

Billable Weight (GROUND):

33 pounds > 10 pounds, so package ships for dimensional weight of 33 pounds

Example #3: Package ships for dimensional weight (AIR ONLY).

Actual Weight

10 pounds

Dimensional Weight

25 pounds

Dimensions:

20" x 20" x 12"

Cubic Size:

20 x 20 x 12 = 4,800 cubic inches

Dimensional Weight:

4,800/194 = 25 pounds

Billable Weight (AIR):

25 pounds > 10 pounds, so package ships for dimensional weight of 25 pounds

Billable Weight (GROUND):

4,800 < 5,194, so package ships for actual weight of 10 pounds
